Knights return to The Castle for Conference Showdown against Paul Quinn
The SUNO Women's Basketball team is back at The Castle on Saturday for a crucial HBCU Athletic Conference West Division matchup against Paul Quinn College. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m., and the Knights enter the contest at 6–1 overall and 1–0 in the HBCUAC, looking to continue their strong early-season surge and protect home court in a key divisional battle.
Knights Enter With Confidence and Momentum
This is the Knights' best start since the 2012-13 season when they went on a 16-0 on their opponents from start to midseason. SUNO comes into Saturday riding a three-game winning streak, including Thursday's hard-fought 68–66 victory over Huston-Tillotson in their conference opener. The Knights have shown they can win tough contests throughout the early season—whether through high-paced scoring or grinding out stops in tight moments. Through seven games, SUNO is averaging 79.7 points per game while holding opponents to 74.0, shaping an identity built on balance, resilience, and defensive toughness.
Balanced Scoring and Veteran Leadership Lead the Way
One of SUNO's greatest strengths this season has been its depth and versatility. Several Knights are delivering consistent scoring production:
-
Tierra Sylvas (15.3 PPG) — efficient from midrange and at the rim.
-
Jordan Harris (14.4 PPG, 42 assists) — a high-level distributor and tempo-setter.
-
Kaylan Jack (11.4 PPG) — steady playmaker who creates scoring opportunities.
-
Jakhiya Smith (57 points, 66 rebounds, 13 blocks) — SUNO's defensive anchor in the paint.
SUNO's passing is a major factor in their offensive success. The Knights average 20 assists per game, sharing the ball with purpose and creating high-quality shots in transition and half-court sets. Harris and Jack have been the catalysts, combining for 63 assists in seven games.
Defense and Hustle Will Shape This Divisional Meeting
SUNO's defense continues to make the difference in big moments. The Knights force more than 22 turnovers per game and pick up over 12 steals per outing, generating momentum and easy baskets. Smith's shot-blocking presence and Sylvas' and Harris' perimeter pressure have consistently disrupted opposing offenses.
Rebounding remains a key focus going into this West Division matchup. SUNO currently sits at a narrow –1.4 margin, and divisional games often hinge on who controls the boards. The Knights' 51-rebound performance against Huston-Tillotson showed they are capable of dominating when fully engaged.
What's at Stake on Saturday
As a West Division matchup, this game carries added weight in the conference standings. A win would move SUNO to 2–0 in HBCUAC play, strengthening their position near the top of the division. Paul Quinn is known for playing with defensive pressure and physicality, meaning SUNO will need to value possession, finish plays around the rim, and stay disciplined defensively.
With Sylvas' scoring, Harris' leadership, Jack's playmaking, Wilson's shooting, and Smith's interior presence, SUNO has the pieces to execute at a high level in this important contest.
Tipoff at 1 p.m. — Pack The Castle
SUNO is 5–1 at home, and support from The Castle faithful continues to elevate the Knights' performance. Fans are encouraged to bring energy and help push SUNO to a fourth straight victory and a 2–0 start in West Division play.
