Knights Host Paul Quinn in Key West Division Matchup at The Castle
Southern University at New Orleans returns to The Castle on Saturday afternoon riding real momentum as the Knights host Paul Quinn College in a pivotal HBCU Athletic Conference West Division showdown. SUNO (2–6, 1–0 HBCUAC) opened conference play with a statement win on Wednesday night, dominating Huston-Tillotson 79–56 to secure its first league victory of the season. Now, the Knights look to build on that progress as they continue their push through West Division play.
KNIGHTS GAINING RHYTHM AT THE RIGHT TIME
The Knights enter Saturday showing significant growth on both ends of the floor. Through eight games, SUNO is averaging 74.4 points per game while shooting 43.1% from the field, and their production has trended upward throughout November. In Wednesday's win, SUNO shot 45.5%, knocked down six threes, and delivered a season-best +16 rebounding margin—an area where they've shown consistent improvement.
The defensive performance against Huston-Tillotson was equally impressive. SUNO held HTU to just 27.6% shooting from the field and 11.5% from three, showcasing the team's ability to lock in, pressure shooters, and control tempo for long stretches.
DOMINANT WEST DIVISION WIN SETS THE TONE
The 79–56 victory over Huston-Tillotson highlighted the Knights' full potential:
- 53 total rebounds, their highest this season
- 17 assists, showing strong ball movement
- Only 10 turnovers, well below their season average
- Balanced scoring from the full rotation
That performance boosted SUNO to 1–0 in HBCUAC play, giving the Knights early momentum in the West Division standings.
KEY PLAYERS FINDING THEIR GROOVE
Dorian "Pop" Booker – Junior Center
One of the HBCUAC's most efficient frontcourt players, Booker leads SUNO with 105 points on 65.3% shooting and a team-high 57 rebounds. His interior presence fuels both offense and defense.
Caleb Williams – Senior Guard
A steady floor general, Williams has delivered consistent scoring (59 points), perimeter shooting, and playmaking with 17 assists through eight games.
Jaylon Hicks – Freshman Wing
Hicks brings energy and versatility, adding 55 points while showing confidence from the perimeter and slashing lanes.
Defensive Difference-Makers
Devin Daniels and Donte Briggs continue anchoring SUNO's defense with a combined 14 steals and 17 blocks. Daniels' shot-blocking volume places him among the top rim protectors in the league.
WHAT WILL HELP SUNO KEEP WINNING IN THE CONFERENCE
1. Own the Glass
SUNO averages 42.6 rebounds per game—including nearly 13 offensive boards—and outrebounded Huston-Tillotson by 16. Maintaining that dominance will be crucial to generating second-chance points and limiting opponent possessions.
2. Take Care of the Ball
Turnovers have been SUNO's biggest challenge this season, but their 10-turnover performance on Wednesday showed how dangerous the team becomes when they value possessions. Sustaining that discipline is key against Paul Quinn's defensive pressure.
3. Continue Balanced Scoring
Seven players have scored at least 20 points this season, demonstrating SUNO's depth. When the Knights spread the scoring and move the ball, their offensive efficiency increases significantly—especially at home, where they average over 80 points per game.
4. Keep Defending at a High Level
Holding conference opponents to 27.6% shooting and limiting three-point looks is a winning formula. SUNO's combination of rim protection, quick hands, and strong defensive rebounding must continue to be their calling card.
THE MATCHUP AHEAD
Paul Quinn College brings physicality, athletic guards, and a deliberate pace—an opponent that will test SUNO's poise and defensive focus. But with confidence growing, rebounding improving, and momentum building from their first conference win, SUNO is positioned to protect home court and strengthen its standing in the HBCUAC West Division.
