Hicks Earns HBCUAC Defensive Player & Freshman of the Week Honors

Southern University at New Orleans men's basketball standout Jaylon Hicks was named the HBCU Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, the league announced Monday, following a dominant all-around performance in the Knights' 96-66 victory over the University of the Virgin Islands on Thursday night.

Hicks delivered one of the most complete games of his young career, recording a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, including eight defensive boards, anchoring a SUNO defense that held UVI to just 66 points. His impact extended well beyond the glass, as the freshman filled the stat sheet with seven assists, five blocks, and three steals, consistently disrupting passing lanes and protecting the rim.

The Knights' defensive intensity set the tone early, and Hicks was at the center of it, igniting transition opportunities while controlling the paint on both ends of the floor. His five blocks and three steals underscored a relentless effort that helped SUNO get the decisive win.

With the honors, Hicks now boasts 12 total weekly awards this season, including 13 recognitions between Offensive or Defensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week accolades, further cementing his status as one of the conference's most impactful players.
