Hicks Setting the Standard, Makes Push for Freshman of the Year
Complete Game, Constant Impact: Jaylon Hicks Sets the Standard for SUNO and the HBCUAC
Jaylon Hicks continues to make his mark across the HBCU Athletic Conference, earning HBCUAC Defensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week honors for his standout performance during the week of December 15–21. The dual recognition highlights both his impact on the defensive end and his continued growth as one of the conference's top young players.
Hicks turned in a complete performance on December 18 at William Carey, posting a 19-point, 13-rebound double-double in 35 minutes of action. Twelve of those rebounds came on the defensive glass, a career high, as he consistently limited second-chance opportunities and anchored SUNO's defense. Hicks also filled the stat sheet with five assists and three steals, showcasing his ability to impact the game in multiple ways.
Through 12 games this season, Hicks has emerged as one of SUNO's most reliable contributors. The freshman is averaging 12.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.8 steals per game, while starting every contest he has played. His defensive instincts have been evident all season, as he continues to guard multiple positions, rebound at a high level, and disrupt passing lanes. Offensively, Hicks has recorded double-figure scoring performances in eight games and has shown steady improvement as a playmaker and decision-maker.
The recognition marks Hicks' sixth weekly honor of the season, including his fifth Freshman of the Week award and first Defensive Player of the Week selection, further solidifying his status as one of the conference's most impactful newcomers.
SUNO Men's Basketball Head Coach James A. Matthews, III praised Hicks' consistency and approach to the game.
"Jaylon does so many things that don't always show up in the box score, but this week they did," Matthews said. "His effort on the defensive end, his ability to rebound the basketball, and his unselfishness as a playmaker set the tone for our team. For a freshman to play with that level of poise and responsibility says a lot about his work ethic and his future."
As conference play continues, Hicks' emergence on both ends of the floor has been a major bright spot for the Knights. With his combination of defensive toughness, basketball IQ, and steady production, Jaylon Hicks continues to prove he is not only one of the top freshmen in the HBCUAC, but one of its most complete players.
