SUNO Knights Thrill in Win Over Tougaloo
February 4, 2025
NEW ORLEANS [February 4, 2025] — Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) Knights Men's Basketball delivered an exciting weekend of basketball, highlighted by a statement victory over the No. 1 team in the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) West Division, the Tougaloo Bulldogs. With a commanding 82-73 win, the Knights continued to build momentum as they push toward the postseason.
Gibson Leads the Charge
Jamal "Tall" Gibson once again showcased his dominance on both ends of the court, leading the Knights to back-to-back victories. His defensive prowess was on full display, as he averaged an astonishing 13 defensive rebounds per game over the two contests. Against the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI), Gibson pulled down a game-high 15 defensive rebounds and recorded six blocks, while against Tougaloo, he grabbed 11 defensive rebounds and tallied five blocks.
Gibson's incredible effort keeps him atop the national leaderboards, ranking first in the NAIA in rebounds per game (15.9), defensive rebounds per game (11.5), and total defensive rebounds (265). In addition to his defensive mastery, Gibson's offensive presence was equally impressive, recording his 51st consecutive double-double against Tougaloo—a program record that cements his legacy as one of SUNO's greatest players.
"Jamal continues to be a game-changer for us," said Head Coach James A. Matthews, III. "His ability to control the boards, protect the rim, and lead by example is a testament to the hard work he puts in every day. His performance this weekend was nothing short of dominant."
Supporting Cast Steps Up
While Gibson anchored the team defensively, SUNO's offensive firepower was on full display. Chaun Moore delivered an impressive 16-point performance, while Tyon Thompson contributed 15 points and orchestrated the offense with eight assists. Their contributions, combined with Gibson's defensive presence, propelled the Knights to their best record since the 2013-2014 season. With the victory, SUNO improved to 10-13 overall and 9-5 in conference play, solidifying their standing as a contender in the HBCUAC.
A Historic Season in the Making
The Knights' victory over the top-ranked Bulldogs is a testament to their resilience and growth throughout the season. This win not only marks a significant milestone for the program but also sets the tone for the critical matchups ahead. As the team continues to find its rhythm, they are proving to be a formidable force in the conference.
The Knights now set their sights on the highly anticipated second round of the Battle for Gentilly, where they will face off against their crosstown rivals on Saturday, February 8. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. CT at The Castle, and fans are encouraged to come out and support the team as they continue their quest for greatness.
With momentum on their side and history being written with each game, SUNO Athletics is witnessing a resurgence—one that is fueled by talent, determination, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
